Earth Day Campus Cleanup
To celebrate Earth Day this year, Ann Thome, a 6-8th Grade Intervention Specialist, and her class of four students held a cleanup at the Brady Middle School campus.
Utilizing an adapted curriculum from Unique Learning System, this spring’s learning unit focused on “Caring for Our Earth.” And in fact, the class learned about the Clean Earth Challenge while reading about a current event published through Unique Learning!
Inspired to make their school cleaner and take part in the Clean Earth Challenge, the class set out on Earth Day (April 22) to clean up trash around the school’s campus. The group of four students spent about an hour walking around campus and collected approximately 200 pieces of trash and filled five trash bags. The bags were deposited in campus dumpsters.
The most common items found were plastic bottles, beverage cans, food wrappers, and plastic bags most likely due to the proximity of the cafeterias. More unusual items included socks, a T-shirt, and cardboard pieces.
Each quarter, Ann’s class hosts a pop-up cafe called Cafe 114, where the students make, prepare, and serve coffee and other treats to faculty and school staff. The spring theme of the cafe was “Protecting the Earth/Earth Day” and recycling. Excited about their efforts, the class displayed information on a table at the café about Clean Earth Day as well as the Clean Earth Challenge Litter Form to highlight their tally.
A big thank you to Ann and her students for working together to make a difference and helping to keep our schools and the surrounding environment clean. Way to go Brady Middle School! Well done!
